  • The Brussels Diamond League at the King Baudouin Stadium 19/09/2011

    H.E Mr. Kembi-Gitura on 15 September 2011 met with world renowned Kenyan athletes at the Hotel Bloom in Brussels before the 35th Belgacom Memorial Van Damme event. His Excellency and Embassy staff were honoured to have an opportunity to meet with the Kenya sports ambassadors. At the meeting His Excellency conveyed his respect to the athletes for making our country proud and admitted that Kenyan solidarity should prevail despite the competitive environment. He reassured the athletes of support during the event.

    The Samsung Diamond League encompasses 32 individual sport disciplines, with a points scoring ‘Diamond Race’ which runs throughout the 14 meet series. This 2011 diamond league has been held in Doha, Shanghai, Rome, Eugene, Oslo, New York, Lausanne, Paris, Birmingham, Monaco, Stockholm, London, Zurich and the finale in Brussels.  Participants in the event compete to receive a Diamond Trophy and a cash prize.

    Kenya’s David Rudisha led in the 800metres race and was closely followed by Absel Kiprop Chepkok in 3rd place and Alfred Kirwa Yego in 5th place.  Milcah Chemos also made us proud in the women’s 3000metres race after emerging top with the highest points. Lucas Rotich, Emmanuel Bett and Eliud Kipchoge also gave it their best and emerged second, fourth and fifth in the 10000 metres race.

    The 36th Belgacom Memorial Van Damme is scheduled to be held on 7 September 2012.
