  • ACP Countries to prioritise support for women & children 18/02/2010

L-R: Hon. Musikari Kombo & Hon. Margaret Kamar

In the just concluded 19th Session of the ACP Parliamentary Assembly and ACP-EU Joint Committee meetings held in Brussels from 25 to 28 January 2010, Parliamentarians concurred with proposals to have ACP Governments and Donors prioritise support for basic social needs and enhance support to vulnerable women and children hard hit by crises around the world. Also at risk are young people, low-wage earners, low-skilled and migrant workers, rural workers and disabled workers.

The Parliamentarians in the Committee on Social Affairs and the Environment were debating “The social impact of the global crisis’ with the guidance of the co-rapporteurs. The members of the Committee concurred that the world is currently facing financial and economic crises coupled with social and environmental crises that could jeopardise the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s).

The ACP Parliamentarians regretted that their countries would be amongst the worst affected by the financial and economic crisis for which they bear no responsibility, the same case applying to the effects of climate change. The Co-rapporteurs were requested to incorporate the amendments arising from the debate and bring forward the report for adoption by the Joint Parliamentary Assembly in their next session.

The Committee agreed to have their next report as “Achieving the MDG’s: innovative responses to meet the social and economic challenged”.

Kenya’s delegation to the meetings was led by Hon. Prof. Margaret Kamar, and included Hon. Musikari Kombo, MP; Francis Mugoh, Second Counsellor, Kenya Embassy Brussels, Rose Sumbeiywo, Second Secretary, Kenya Embassy Brussels and Boniface Lenairoshi, Clerk Assistant-National Assembly of Kenya (Secretary to the delegation).

During the meetings, the Kenyan delegation participated in the ACP Plenary Session, the ACP Committee on Social Affairs and the Environment, of which Kenya is the 1st Vice Chair, and the ACP-EU Joint Committee on Social Affairs and the Environment.
