Visit by Speaker of Kenyan Senate, Hon. Ekwee Ethuro 25/02/2014
The Speaker of the Kenyan Senate, Hon. Ekwee Ethuro, visited the Kingdom of Belgium from 17 to 21 February 2014. The Hon. Speaker was accompanied by Senator Paul Kimani Wamatangi, Senator Daisy Kanainza, Senator Prof. John Lonyangapuo, and the Clerk of the Senate, Mr. Jeremiah Nyegenye.
The main purpose of the visit was to pay a courtesy call on the chairperson of the Belgian Senate, Ms Sabine de Bethune. The visit was momentous in reinforcing the institutional setup of the Kenyan Senate, which is more than a year old following the elections of 2013.
Hon. Senator Ekwee Ethuro also visited the Director for Africa in the EU’s European External Action Service (EEAS), to discuss funding programmes for Kenya under the 11th European Development Fund (EDF).
The delegation furthermore paid a courtesy call on the governor of West Flanders, H.E. Mr. Carl Decaluwé, and discussed areas of mutual cooperation between Kenya and West Flanders. The visit to the province also included a site visit to the port of Zeebrugge and a sustainable agricultural farm, Inagro, where lessons in contemporary agriculture could be replicated in Kenya.
